Tyler grew up in a small town in Indiana, where he met and married Kayla, his high school sweetheart. He was her best friend and her biggest supporter. Tyler cherished his sons Hudson and Wyatt. He loved brewing beer with his parents and siblings, and he enjoyed spending time outdoors canoeing, kayaking, and hiking. A dimpled smile and an infectious, memorable laugh. No one who ever heard Tyler laugh could help but to laugh with him. He was always the life of the party.

Tyler loved to run. It was calming, peaceful, a way to be outside and let everything fade away. He began running marathons in 2014 with the encouragement of his oldest sister, and the habit stuck. Of course he went right to marathons. He worked toward qualifying for the most prestigious marathon he could; Boston. He planned to run several races this year, including one to try to Boston qualify, and the Marine Corps Marathon.

Tyler touched so many lives, and influenced so many people; they were unequivocally drawn to him. Running was one small way for those who knew and loved him to stay connected to him. Part of his legacy is encouraging others to get out and get moving, even though he is no longer with us. Run Like a Fox (#RLAF) was born after Tyler’s sudden passing. Running was his passion and a way for him to encourage others, such as family friend Kyle. Kyle was the one who came up with the name and grew the group as he brought us all together to honor Tyler’s memory.

He thought of RLAF because he and Tyler kept in contact through Snapchat; Kyle almost always started his day by sending a snap of himself running or doing something. Tyler would reciprocate, usually beating Kyle’s mileage by about 4-10 miles. He would be all smiles in the snaps while Kyle looked miserable, but that is how they communicated. At one point, Tyler said “Let’s do this every time we run or work out. Well push each other to keep getting better.” In life, he continually pushed those around him; those he loved, to keep getting better, and to keep moving forward. Even in his absence Tyler has a huge impact on Kyle’s life, and so many others.

He is encouraging others to get up, lace up, and move their feet across the dirt and pavement to better themselves.

Why Run Like a Fox, and why do we run?

We run to honor the man that attracted such a following in life, and in death. We run because Tyler ran, and he was happy when he did. We run because Tyler looked good, and dammit, we want to look good too. We run because running was a big part of Tyler’s life; a part we will gladly and proudly continue.

We will remember Tyler with each step and each breath that we take.
